Brian and Averil Collier

Ten Years On, Still Calling Malaysia Home

For many expats, Malaysia begins as a work posting, an adventure, or a temporary move. For Brian and Averil Collier, it has become something much more permanent: home. Originally from the UK, Brian and Averil have now lived in Malaysia for ten years, though their connection to the country goes back even further through work and family. Now retired and happily settled here with his wife, Brian reflects on what makes life in Malaysia so special, from family ties and regional travel to the easy-going lifestyle that has won his heart.

What first brought you to Malaysia?
I worked for a Malaysian company for twenty years, so the country was already very much part of my life. Our son also came to work here and married a Malaysian Chinese, which made our connection even stronger. By the time I retired, living here felt like the obvious choice. By then, we already had two Malaysian grandchildren, which made the decision even easier.

What do you love most about living here?
Everything, really. But if I had to name the main reasons, it would be the people, the food, the family connections, and the lifestyle. Life here feels easy and welcoming, and there is a real warmth to the country that makes it very special.

Is there anything you wish was better?
The one thing we find most frustrating is the littering. It is such a beautiful country, and it’s a shame to see that not everyone treats it with the respect it deserves.

How do you spend your leisure time?
We love travelling around Asia, and Malaysia is perfectly placed as a hub for regional travel. It makes exploring the region so convenient. Aside from that, we really enjoy the easy social lifestyle here and spending time with friends.

Tell us about your MM2H experience please?
We first applied around twelve years ago, and at the time the approval process was very straightforward. We are now on our second approval, although it is now only valid for five years, which we do see as a step backwards compared to before.

Malaysia My Second Home… is it still your second home?
Although we still have a home and family in the UK, we spend most of the year in Malaysia and now very much regard it as our first home.

What advice would you give people considering MM2H under the new rules?
With the visa now only lasting five years and being tied to property purchase, I think it is important to be absolutely certain about your decision to apply and live here. It is a bigger commitment than it once was.

Favourite holiday destination in Malaysia?
We absolutely love Penang and visit three or four times a year. We always stay at our favourite hotel, the Shangri-La Rasa Sayang. It really feels like a home away from home for us.

What do you miss most about the UK?
Our daughter and grandchildren, of course. But with our son and grandchildren also here in Malaysia, it is always going to be a difficult balance.

Any advice for newly arrived expats?
We have made lots of new friends by going to the TEG Media Mingle events, and that would be my best advice to anyone trying to settle in. Getting out, meeting people, and building a social circle makes all the difference.

How has Malaysia changed your perspective on life?
Life here is so much more relaxed. Just waking up in the morning and knowing you can wear shorts and a T-shirt every day is a bonus in itself. The pace of life feels lighter and more enjoyable.

Do you see yourself staying long-term?
We have no plans to leave Malaysia. We truly enjoy our life here and see ourselves staying for the long term.
